MESSAGE TO RESIDENTS OF WESTON

Dear Weston Neighbor:

I’d like to ask for a moment of your time to introduce myself to you; my name is Kim Schnitzius and I’m a candidate for Weston’s City Commission, Seat 2. I moved to Weston in 2004 with my husband, a software engineer with Citrix Systems, Inc., and our three children, who were raised in Weston and are now young adults. Almost two years ago, community leaders I’ve worked with asked me to run for the city commission since the current seat 2 commissioner is terming out. Because I am so proud to live in Weston, I am devoted to public service, and I have the leadership experience it takes to serve my city, I said yes! Now I’m asking for your vote, but you’ll want to know a little about me first.

I’m a former special education teacher and exceptional student education specialist responsible for running a hospital school program. I’ve maintained my professional educator’s certification in exceptional student education and added certification in health by taking classes at Broward College every five years. I recently finished my last round of certification coursework with two semesters of Spanish, since learning this beautiful language has always been on my “bucket list”, and will allow me to communicate with more of my Weston neighbors in the language they are most comfortable with.

I’m also a dedicated community volunteer, starting before I moved to Weston and continuing even now. I’ve been active with Girl Scouts for over 20 years, holding volunteer positions at every level from troop leader to my current work as a Gold Award Advisor, mentoring high school girls as they strive to earn the highest leadership award in Girl Scouting. I’m active in many other organizations including continued involvement at Western High School as a member of the School Advisory Committee (SAC) and chair of the PTSA’s scholarship committee. I’m also an appointed member of the Broward County Consumer Protection Board and board member of an environmental advocacy group. Within Weston, I’m a newly inducted Rotarian and an executive board member of the Weston Music Society.

I’m also a member of Weston’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), which supports our first responders and advocates for emergency preparedness. I am so proud to support our BSO firefighters, EMS, and law enforcement officers! Community safety is a top priority for me and our first responders will have 100% and then some of the support they need from me to do their jobs and keep us all safe. In response to COVID and the increase in families facing food insecurity, I also founded the Weston Community Garden Society with the mission of growing fresh, organic produce to donate to local food banks.

As a commissioner I will work full time to maintain Weston as one of the best cities in America in which to live, work, and play, and I look forward to helping our residents and businesses deal with the pandemic, recover, and thrive. If you would like to know more, please visit my website at KimForWeston.com, and feel free to reach out via email, social media, or a phone call.

Thank you,
Kim Schnitzius
